Alone. A word which every human is scared of even thinking about it. Humans are made to live among other humans and adjust to them. But you know what can make you distant from everyone and finally all alone?

It is something we all do and don’t even consider it as a something bad let alone a sin. Backbiting. But isn’t it ok to just say the things which truly are in that person. No it isn’t. Abu Hurayrah (May Allah be pleased with him) narrated that Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) said:

“Do you know what backbiting is?” They said, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He then said, “It is to say something about your brother that he would dislike.” Someone asked him, “But what if what I say is true?” The Messenger of Allah said, “If what you say about him is true, you are backbiting him, but if it is not true then you have slandered him.”

If you keep backbiting about someone it will reflect on your personality. How? You will be seen as someone who takes things in a negative light rather than ignoring the faults of others. I have known people who backbite just to make people laugh, which is again worse as it just shows what you do to get people’s attention. Problems like these will arise in your character and the people around you. When we don’t follow our creator’s orders problems are bound to occur.

To warn ourselves further from this grave sin ie; bacbiting that we regularly do is this ayah in which Allah warns us against backbiting which is like eating the flesh of our dead brother.

“Would any of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? No you would be horrified.” (Surah Hujurat 49:12)

So, if cannibalism is beastly then so is backbiting, it is just dangerous and disgusting for everyone.

Think about it, would you like people talking behind your back, even if it’s a mere comment like “He is like a giraffe or maybe an elephant or maybe she is just not good looking or his way of speaking is idiotic etc.”

So my dear brothers and sisters beware of even listening to backbiting, oppose it or else you will be among the backbiters who enjoy knowing their fellow brother’s faults.

Remember Allah knows what you say and hear:

“Not a word does he utter but there is a watcher by him (to record it).” (Surah Qaf: 18)
