“O you who believe! Betray not Allah and His Messenger, nor betray knowingly your Amana (Things entrusted to you, and all the duties which Allah has ordained for you).”(8:27)

It is always good to have someone we trust to share our secrets. In Islam, every believer is a brother or sister to the other; we are one body, and so we should trust one another.

Trustworthiness, one of the most important characteristic a Muslim should possess for it makes our relations and also the society better. Trustworthiness is a dimension of honesty. Trustworthiness entails honoring and fulfilling commitments, promises, trusts and covenants.  It covers moral, social, legal and religious obligations.

In Arabic, the word for it is Amana, and our prophet was called Al-Amin even before prophethood by the non-believers. Fulfilling job duties, repaying debts and fulfilling marriage vows also come under being trustworthy.

Anas bin Malik narrated: Allah’s messenger addressed us and said in his sermon, “He has no Iman who is not trustworthy, and he has no Deen who does not keep promises”.

Allah Hu Akbar! How seriously should we take the matter of being Trustworthy? We should even be trustworthy for those who were treacherous to us as it comes in a hadith.

The people of Midian were dishonest and so they were punished for it.

Allah says:

“And give full measure when you measure, and weigh with an even balance. That is the best [way] and best in result.” (17:35)

We should always remember, fulfill promises but only as long as it doesn’t contradict with the Islamic teachings.

Introspect now on how trustworthy we are…How many secrets have we exposed and promises have we broken? Repent now before it’s too late.
