“Muslims are crazy…they starve themselves for a whole month!”
Perhaps this is your understanding of Ramadaan?! Well, I shall put your mind to rest.

Sha’baan is here, and there’s little time left before Ramadan. Everyone is preparing in their own little ways, awaiting the blessed month of spirituality. Sadly, some preparations have nothing to do with the Sunnah and are based on pure innovations.
Ramadaan truly is an amazing month. Spectacular displays of righteousness are evident in all directions. That’s not to say they are merely displays, or facades. Everyone connects with the Quraan during Ramadaan by the mercy of Allah. You find yourself, listening, reciting, reading, trying to understand…
“We going to fast,”my grandmother announced as she entered the kitchen.
“Put down dat doughnut,” she said harshly. “Ya too fat no how,”she continued. Her Trinidadian accent was used only at times of anger or when she wanted to emphasize her point. This time I suspected a little of both was a play.
Watching my family having a whale of a time while shopping for Eid is great but there is a deep sorrow inside me. I feel content seeing their gleeful faces, but at the same time I’m down in the mouth.
I feel a throbbing sensation in my throat on realising that Ramadan will leave us soon; too soon.
So, the month of fasting, spirituality and the Qur’an has come to meet us once again. Many who were here last Ramadaan, are no longer with us to reap the fruits of this blessed month. We ask Allah to accept their good deeds and forgive them.
